Pocky test image

Testing my models (which are finally finished) in the actual image.  Text needs changing as does the composition. I hate photography because you don't notice it's wrong until it's on the computer.  I might have to scan in my models and work with them that way but I like the shadows you get from real photos.  More uploads tomorrow anyway.

Oh and happy Halloween!

Editorial - Madness of Crowds

Editorial illustration, this time for the New Statesman.  Big thanks to my temporary art director Grace for this one.

T-shirt Competition

My entry for a Creative Allies competition to design a t-shirt for Rickie Lee Jones.  I'd never heard of her but after listening to her music and reading the brief it seemed like my folksy-inspired style fitted quite well so I thought I'd have a go!  You can vote for my shirt here.

Sewing Patterns

Some sewing patterns I devised for the advertising project.  Hopefully my sewing machine will arrive soon!

Finalized Editorials

Two versions of my editorial piece, not entirely sure which one to go with.  I like the second one as an image (I'm a sucker for limited palettes) but the top one is a bit clearer.  Any feedback would be appreciated!

Editorial Client Visuals

Two of my ideas for an article about leisure sickness.  Not the kind of thing you want to be illustrating when you're sick yourself but I do like both of these ideas.  I'm going to try closing in on the suitcase once I've drawn it in Illustrator to see if it makes for a better composition.

Editorial: Why Small Victories Matter

Editorial work for another Guardian article.  I played around with a few different colour schemes but felt the green reflected the idiom I chose to illustrate best (making a mountain out of a molehill) because it kinda looks like grass?  The original blue background looked like the molehills were floating in the sky which is a different message altogether!  Another version had little moles on each flag but it wasn't clear when I shrank the image down to fit the article.

Life Drawing

Today's life drawing session.  2 hours of intense drawing and re-drawing, drawing and re-drawing again, to produce what I think is a relatively accurate drawing of the model.  She does have a head and legs though.  My tutor gave me one of the best compliments I've had this year regarding this drawing.  I'm happy.

Editorial - How to Decorate

For a Guardian article about how external decoration can detract from the 'real' person inside, how it's meaningless and also quite easy to achieve.  It's intentionally garish.

Social Situation - Finished (for now)

So here's the final version of a social situation, finished sooner than expected which is nice.  I'm sure there'll be things I can tweak but generally I really like it.

Social Situation - WIP

Working with Illustrator and a limited palette to get that kind of retro feel to the image.  I'm really starting to enjoy using Illustrator, it's surprisingly flexible and easy to change things you're unsure about - like right now I think that cat needs to move again... Hopefully will be done by tonight and I will upload ASAP.

Life Drawing

A selection from yesterday's life class, various timed drawings ranging from one minute to fifteen.  I prefer the longer sessions for technical practice but these do force you to be decisive and confident with mark making and often I produce my best, most interesting drawings this way.
